Six Years Have Led to This
Six years of on-and-off work, sore forearms, cut fingers, and sore knuckles have led to this unknown destination. Exactly how I got here is another story.
Today, though, I’m in my parents’ garage, drawing out one of the most intricate designs I've made to date. The hood of a cobra begins to take shape on the specially coated white fabric. I mentally map out how I’ll sew this Snake Eyes Surf Club flag. Once everything is drawn and cut, I’ll begin sewing.
The base is a black 2’ x 3’ rectangle, your standard flag shape. The one everyone sees when you say FLAG. It doesn’t take long to make, and by now, I don’t even know how many flags I’ve made this same way. Easy work this part is. The good white part of the design is where the work will be tested.
Slowly, the hours pass. Working left to right, I trace the pencil-drawn design with needle and thread. Replicating the work on the bottom as I draw sew. Layers of white sandwich the black base.
Once the design is sewn on, I must use small iris surgical scissors to cut away the parts that aren’t needed for the design. Careful not to snip the threads, as this would require me to go back and re-sew over the design. Both sides, mind you. No, something I ever want to do.
Success.
The design is free, and the flag is ready for grommets. Punch. Punch. Punch. Punch
This was one of the more complicated flags I’ve done. The many parts of the snake, most of them round in shape, require smooth curve transitions.
I’m super stoked and super glad I took up the challenge of making this flag.
